Born into a musical family, Chunyee Lu, began the study of violin at six years of age, first under his father, a violinist of Shanghai Philharmonic. Later under Professor Li Ke Chiang, a professor of violin at the Shanghai Conservatory.
When he was young, Chunyee was also involved in other areas of the fine arts, such as sculpture and oil painting, and have published many works.
In 1980's, he came to the United States to pursue his greatest passion -- violin making and fine instruments restoration. After graduation from Chicago School of Violin Making, Chunyee worked as the primary restoration expert for Kagan & Gaines. Later he became the Head of Restoration in William Harrison Lee Company, mainly working on fine instruments restoration and instruments making quality control. Since 2001 he became the owner of Guadagnini Violin Shop in downtown Chicago.
During the past two decades, Chunyee Lu has served some of the most influential musicians throughout the world (see "Clients Glamour") and done very important restoration works on rare instruments including the finest instruments, such as Strad, Guarneri, and Amati (see "Restoration") and received admiration letters from Yehudi Menuhin, Itzhak Perlman, YoYo Ma, and Aaron Rosand. Assistant principle violist of Chicago Symphony Orchestra LiKuo Chang calls Lu "among the foremost experts".
Decades of daily experience of restoring fine instruments and bows has given Chunyee Lu a broad knowledge base of fine instruments and bows. His remarkable gift in restoration is one important factor that contributes to his exceptional ability in identification and authentication of fine instruments and bows. Over the past two decades, he has accumulated a large reference data base of characteristics of fine instruments and bows. He serves as an identification, authentication, and valuation connoisseur and scholar for concert artists, musicians from major orchestras (including Chicago Symphony Orchestra), and private collectors all over the world (see "Appraisals & Certificates"). Guadagnini Violin Shop's appraisals are highly regarded and respected by major insurance companies.
Lu travels to Europe (France & Italy mostly) on a regular basis and established a substantial Europe acquisition connections (see "Fine Instruments & Bows").
